Study & Practice Pharmacy in the UK (for International Students)
Considering a career that combines science, patient care, and real-world impact? This guide outlines workforce demand and the registration process for international students who plan to practise in the UK after graduation.
Thinking about a career that blends science, patient care and real-world impact?
UK pharmacy ticks all three. The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan (June 2023) forecasts strong growth in pharmacist training places—rising by ~50% to around 5,000 places by 2031/32, with a 29% uplift to ~4,300 by 2028/29 and the first expansion from 2026/27 (+15%).
In short: opportunity is growing.
Eligibility:
A UK‐accredited MPharm is academically recognized by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Both UK citizens and international students holding a valid UK MPharm meet the academic requirement for registration.
Pre-registration (Internship):
All prospective pharmacists must complete a 52-week pre-registration training year in a GPhC‐approved setting (hospital or community pharmacy) under a registered tutor. During this period students must log practical competencies and, since 2023, pass the GPhC Registration Assessment.
In the latest June 2025 exam, 77% of the 2,913 test takers have passed the assessment. International students on a UK student visa can apply to pre-registration posts via NHS/industry vacancies (often advertised by employers like hospital trusts or pharmacy chains) and must secure a training position and training contract. Successful completion of the year and exam leads to GPhC registration.
Nationality:
There are no nationality restrictions by the GPhC itself, but non-UK nationals must ensure legal right to work.
Visa/Work Permit:
International graduates typically switch from a Student Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa (Health and Care Worker stream) sponsored by the employer offering the pre-reg post. Pharmacists are on the UK’s shortage occupation list, which may ease visa sponsorship requirements. Without sponsorship, one could use the Graduate Visa (2-year post-study work visa) to seek a training position, but registration requires confirmed sponsorship when taking up employment.
Exams/Additional Training:
After the internship year, candidates sit the GPhC Registration Assessment. No additional bridging courses are needed for UK degrees.
